Popliteal Artery
- Continuation of femoral artery
- branches = lateral and medial superior genicular, middle genicular, sural, lateral and medial inferior genicular, anterior and posterior tibial arteries
- Popliteal artery is tethered proximally at its origin as it emerges from the adductor hiatus and distally at the tendinous arch of the soleus.
- 50º hyperextension of the knee results in popliteal artery rupture (Kennedy JC, JBJS 1963;45A:889).
- Popliteal artery injury occurs in 0.05% of TKA.
- Popliteal artery is generally posterolateral to the PCL. (Ninomiya JT, Dean JC, Goldberg VM. Injury to the popliteal artery and its anatomic location in total knee arthroplasty. J Arthroplasty. 1999 Oct;14(7):803-9.)
